Which brings us up to the last few weeks. It became obvious I needed a break to avoid crashing and burning so we took two weeks off. The first week involved us spending the week in a cabin on the shore of Lake Manitoba near the town of St. Laurent (about 1 hour north of Winnipeg). I was there Mon-Wednesday (came back for Leadership Summit) and Sherry and the girls were there Mon-Friday.
Our stay was free of charge as the owner is a generous lady who goes to our church. She’s known affectionately as “Grandma Joan”. She likes the cabin to be enjoyed by people in ministry who need some time away.
The cabin was part of a private row of cabins owned by the same family… the above pic is the gated entrance.
ÂÂ
The view from the deck of the cabin.
ÂÂ
Enjoying the beach under the full moon.
ÂÂ
Kathryn LOVES the water.
And then there was the frog catching…
And the rock catching…
Sherry did this flowerpot (and she says she isn’t artistic!?!) but unfortunately it, the message to Grandma Joan and various other ones her and the girls created perished that night in a violent thunderstorm that also downed some trees around the cabins. Good thing Sherry took pics!
Of course there were also other important things to do like…
…reading
ÂÂ
…writing (Sherry introduced Kathryn to Su Doku at this cabin. This is a pic of the first one that Kathryn completed without any help. So I tried one for the first time too. Couldn’t finish it.)
ÂÂ
…and ice cream!
and here’s a fun little pic. Much like haggis is to the Scots, it is a national obsession for many Canucks to start their day with a bowlful of one of several brands of “spider egg cereal” (a mix of spider eggs, nuts and cereal flakes). However it is so rare to find an actual spider in the box that it is considered great luck… a good omen for our vacation!

Hey…looks like a nice place. Where abouts is this near? Twin Beaches, SandPiper beach….? I have some news regarding this area of the Prov. (maybe we will bump into each other the next time you are fortunate to spend time there at the cottage).

Unspeakably cute kids, unspeakably gross food.
You’re kidding, write? About the spiders and spider eggs? Surely you must be kidding. Please, tell me you’re kidding. My boyfriend might be moving to Vancouver soon, and if I ever find out anybody’s fed him spider eggs…bodily harm may occur.

Mel,
Take very little of what a Canadian says seriously. We are thoroughly amused by our own jokes so we’re often in a state of satire, sarcasm or dry humour… especially when the possibility exists of putting one over on our american friends.
However, even if it were true… it still wouldn’t be as gross as eating at Tommy’s World Famous Hamburgers in East LA that Octavio “treated” me to last year. The game there is to see if you can make it home before the explosive diarrhea starts.

Whew! I’d have caught on if we were in person, it’s this lack of a tone of voice or any facial cues thing that gets me…
The burger place to avoic at all costs in Cincinnati is White Castle, as in, “Harold and Kumar Go to White Castle.” They have these little bitty and very nasty square (clearly something’s wrong here) burgers called Sliders. They call ‘em Sliders for a reason– they slide right through ya, baby.

Lon,
Overall I enjoyed Practitioners. Because of the format of multiple authors doing various chapters or sections… there was some chapters that I really enjoyed (like the one on 24/7 prayer and all the stuff written by David Ruis - maybe because he was mostly talking not only about Winnipeg but even my end of town
). Then there were some some that didn’t do anything for me or I couldn’t follow/understand.
I’d still recommend the read tho.

I sort of like the idea of spider-egg cereal. Telling my daughter that those little puffed-rice things in her HBOO are actually crispy-roasted spider eggs might get her to finish her breakfast. Having ants (real ones) in our Kix grossed my boys out at first, but I microwaved the whole boxful and moved it out of ant access. Now they pull off the box, peer through the translucent cereal bag, give it a shake, and say “You think they’ve just sifted to the bottom, Dad?” Then they pour themselves a bowl.
I don’t think there will be a fight over who gets the dust at the bottom of this one, though.
