The 2nd most dangerous book I’ve read

I first became aware of Shane Claiborne through a Christianity Today article last Fall… the same issue that my random obscure church got mentioned in.  ;)

So I picked up his book, The Irresistable Revolution last Monday (along with Velvet Elvis - which I read in half a day - The Irresistable Revolution took me a few days longer).

I did my best to disagree with, disregard, reject, write off and rationalize away 90% of the book (I’m exagerrating) but even if your successful at that the remaining 10% is still more than enough to mess you up.

I really need to process the implications of what I’ve read so I won’t dive into it right now but I’m curious if anybody out there has read it and what your thoughts/reactions were?

Love it or hate it, I would suggest this required reading for every mystic

p.s.  Part of what made it so dangerous was how it reminds you of the danger of the MOST dangerous book.

niza

thanks for the lead. i think i’ll pick it up on amazon.

wildgoosechase

also, thanks for the “heads up”. i will check both books out. i have been meaning to read velvet elvis, just haven’t got to it yet.

You know how I like to be messed up. I’ll go find it.

I suspect reaction/opinion will polarize… you may not agree with everything him and his community do…. but they are DOING where many (I’m speaking to myself here) at worst only talk and at best only dream. I look forward to the discussion.

I don’t know if it was a good idea to get so messed up right before going to see Invisible Children tonight (http://www.invisiblechildren.com/home.php). My next post might be from northern Uganda.

Sam.

Sounds like I should pick me up a copy. Thanks.

How are you doing by the way?

nooc

It’s crunch time (yet again!). Thanks for asking Sam. I’ll try and post on it later (lielielie) but next Friday the 28th is our first attempt as a young adult ministry at putting on an otreach/drop-in cafe for the young adults in our surrounding inner city community. See http://www.riverwood.cc/themix

There is a whole PILE of logistics that have to fall into place yet to pull this off. I’ll post on how it goes!

The book is great. Whether or not you agree with it, it makes you ask some very important questions.

This guy is not only smart and compassionate, he’s also one of the nicest people you’ll ever meet. I met him through a friend at the Chiristian Community Development Association Conference last Fall, and he’s coming to talk at my church retreat in a few weeks, too. If you ever get a chance to talk to him for a little while (after a book signing, lecture, conference, whatever), do it!

Mark

I’m in the midst of reading it - picked it up a couple of weeks ago but am also finishing “Shaping of things to come” at the same time. I agree, Shane is a revolutionary AND an inspiration for every mystic - You can find one of his audio messages at

Mark, the link didn’t work. Appears ‘goodsamaritan.org’ isn’t someone’s domain anymore. Was that the correct link? Thanks for checking.

I’m currently reading Velvet Elvis… It’s quite refreshing… For the longest time I thought I was the only one who had the ideas and thoughts that Mr. Bell writes about… I find myself thinking “Yes, that’s exactly what I’ve been saying!” quite often while reading his book…
